Understanding the Importance of Keywords
Keywords form the foundation of any successful online marketing strategy, serving as the bridge that connects content with the intended audience. However, success lies not just in ranking for keywords, but in ranking for the right ones. Neil Patel's journey offers a valuable lesson in this regard.
Case Study: Neil Patel's Experience
Neil Patel, a prominent figure in the digital marketing world, once had a website that attracted over a million visitors per month while his competitors struggled to reach even a quarter of that traffic volume. However, despite this significant difference in traffic, Neil's competitors were valued at a staggering $800 million, whereas Neil's website was worth less than a tenth of that amount.
This eye-opening scenario taught Neil a crucial lesson: higher rankings and increased traffic do not necessarily translate into more revenue. It underscores the importance of targeting not just popular but also lucrative keywords.
How to Choose Profitable Keywords?
Choosing the right keywords involves a strategic approach that goes beyond mere popularity. Here are some key steps to help select keywords that will drive sales and leads:
- Competitor Analysis: Analyze competitors' keywords and identify gaps in their strategy. This can uncover opportunities for users to target keywords they may have overlooked.
- Keyword Research Tools: Utilize Ubersuggest keyword research features to discover relevant keywords with sufficient search volume and low competition.
- Long-Tail Keywords: Consider long-tail keywords – longer and more specific phrases – which often have less competition and are more likely to convert.
- User Intent: Understand the intent behind the keywords. Are visitors looking for information, products, or services? Tailor the content to match their intent.
- Local SEO: If a business serves a specific geographic area, incorporating location-based keywords can help attract local customers.
Tips for Content Creation and Optimization
Creating and optimizing content around selected keywords is a critical component of an effective online strategy.
Here are several tips to maximize the impact of the content:
- High-Quality Content: Develop engaging, informative, and valuable content that addresses the needs and interests of the target audience. High-quality content is more likely to rank well and convert visitors.
- Keyword Placement: Naturally integrate chosen keywords into the content, including headings, subheadings, and body text. Avoid keyword stuffing, as it can negatively impact rankings.
- User Experience: Ensure the website offers a seamless and enjoyable user experience. Fast loading times, mobile-friendliness, and easy navigation contribute to improved rankings.
- Regular Updates: Keep content fresh and relevant. Search engines prioritize current information.
- Optimize Meta Tags: Create compelling meta titles and descriptions that encourage users to click on links in search results.
- Quality Backlinks: Build high-quality backlinks from authoritative websites within the industry to enhance the website's authority and credibility.
How to Find the Right Keywords Using Ubersuggest?
This guide provides instructions on how to use Ubersuggest to identify the most profitable keywords and achieve high conversion rates.
1. Under the Keywords Research drop-down menu on the left-hand navigation, select Keywords by Traffic.
In the search bar, enter a competitor's website. This report displays all the keywords for which the domain is ranking organically and offers keyword ideas based on the traffic the competitor is receiving from those keywords.
Data for metrics like search volume (vol), a website’s ranking position (position), estimated visits (EST. Visits), and SEO difficulty (SD) will be displayed.
Here are some key takeaways when reviewing this data:
- Keywords consisting of three or more words generally convert better than single or double-word keywords.
- Keywords with an SD score of 40 or lower are typically easier to rank for.
- Focus on keywords that are highly relevant to the products or services offered, have a low SD score, and have a search volume of over 500. These are the keywords to target for ranking.
2. Users can also use the feature Keyword Ideas to find profitable keywords, to get them simply type in a target keyword in the search bar.
This report will divide the results into 5 categories: Suggestions, Related, Questions, Prepositions, and Comparisons.
On each category is possible to find hundreds of keyword options to add to the users' website content.
The same metrics included in the Keywords by Traffic feature will be displayed here and the recommendations remain the same.

3. Export the keywords to CSV, copy them to Clipboard, or Add them to a Keyword List and make a master target list. Keywords with a low search difficulty, such as “SD,” are easier to rank for. So, it’s better to target those first.
4. Upload the Master Keywords Spreadsheet and Start Tracking
Now that a list of target keywords is set, users can start optimizing their existing content including the profitable keywords selected, and also add them to the Rank Tracking section to analyze and track the positions of their pages around the new keywords.
To do that, navigate back to the Project Dashboard and click on View Rank Tracking.
On the next screen, click the Add Keywords button. A dialog box will appear.
In the dialog box, click the Import from CSV button.
The master list of keywords can be imported from a CSV file. Ubersuggest will extract the keywords from the CSV and add them to the project box.
Once the keywords are uploaded, click "Start Tracking" to add the master list of profitable keywords to the project.
Bonus Tip: Creating content or blog posts around the selected keywords is essential to rank them. Ensure that the keywords are mentioned naturally within the content. Alternatively, if existing pages are related to these keywords, they can be modified to incorporate the newly identified keywords.
In the realm of online marketing, success depends on choosing the right keywords and crafting content that resonates with the target audience. By understanding the importance of keywords, conducting thorough research, and applying effective content optimization strategies, a website can achieve improved visibility, traffic, and conversions. It's not just about popularity; it's about profitability.
